I can’t remember ever reading journalism that reads so much like poetry. Maggie Messitt builds images in The Rainy Season: Three Lives in the New South Africa that come back around like the scent of an old love that knocks you on your ass for a while. Or maybe like the scent of rain just now falling on long-dry land. Whatever it is, Messitt writes it and it is intoxicating and heartbreaking.
